What causes a rack and pinion to go bad besides a wreck? I wrecked into a median a 1 1/2 years ago. I didnt report it to my insurance company because I have a $500 deductible. I fixed the two front tires, tie rod, and wheel bearing. Now my rack is messed up and it will cost $1000 to fix. I have to file a claim now and my insurance company is disputing the wreck caused the rack to go bad.

UCANTCME replied: "1. the wreck that you had, but it is too late now. 2. wear and tear. 3. lack of maintenance."

Dean B replied: "Besides a wreck? Nothing. I guess you already assumed that. Now convincing the insurance company that somehow the two events are related, over a year later, is the tough part. You took a chance to beat the deductible by repairing the visible damage, and unfortunate as it may be...hidden damage to the steering system caught up to the deductible. Good luck convincing them; it's cat and mouse with insurance companies."

bobweb replied: "Sorry, in my opinion it's too late to make the claim on your car insurance."

What is the unheated rack of a broiler pan? I have a recipe that calls for me to "place meat on the unheated rack of a broiler pan", then put it under the oven broiler. Just what is the "unheated rack of a broiler pan"?

mrfroo replied: "It's the part that has all the ridges or holes that kind of looks like a grill, sort of. They want you to not put it on one that has been sitting in the broiler."

justafren replied: "In a gas range, the broiler is usually in the bottom. There should be a pan with a rack in it. If it is electric, I don't know anything about it."

roadrunnerjim replied: "It's just a cold broiler pan."

clumsyraine replied: "I agree with roadrunnerjim... I interpret "unheated" as don't preheat the pan."

how do i disassemble the bakers rack i purchased from Costco 5 years ago? i purchased a bakers rack from costco 5 years ago & when i assembled it i made it all one, tall rack. now i want to split it into 2 pieces but can;t get the connecting legs to come apart. any suggestions? serious answers please. thanks. i tried a hammer & got the shelf off, but there are legs stuck into each other- do i have to use a flathead screwdriver to pry them apart?

Z-Taxi replied: "Patience and brute force delicately applied. If you want to try a hammer, hold a piece of scrap wood where you are aiming your taps so that the hammerhead doesn't damage the wood."

How hard is it to change the rack and pinion on a 1990 mustang hatchback? im planning on buying a 1990 mustang hatchback but the current owner states that the cars rack and pinion are shot. now i know that the rack and pinion deal with the steering of the car but i don't exactly know where they are or how they work. so how hard/how many things will i have to unbolt to change it. Also how much hp does a 1990 mustang hatchback with BBK headers have?

bearwabbitbearwabbit replied: "The steering rack on this unit is mounted on the engine firewall. If you don't know where it's located at you are in for a lot-o-good trouble. Might be better if you took it to a shop. For the simple reason of sanity!"

BDCardinal replied: "the rack is very simple for someone who is mechanically inclined. all 79+ mustangs have the rack mounted to the front of the engine cradle. there are 2 bolts that hold it to the front of the cradle, or K-member as its known in the ford community, then the power steering lines and the outer tie rods. there is a lock bolt on the steering shaft also. they are NOT on the firewall, anyone who has done any work on newer mustangs would have known that. just not that you will need an alignment after, and make sure that you properly bleed the power steering, as running the pump dry will destroy it. as for the hp rating, what kind of BBK headers, there are shorty and long tube. also does it have cats or no? those will all make a difference."

What would a hat rack fear about a giant balloon that a normal person wouldn't? Let's say that you're a living, walking hat rack creature. What would you fear about a giant balloon that a normal person wouldn't fear? You can't be lit on fire and the giant balloons can't be popped, so fear of popping the balloons or catching on fire don't count. Clarification: Although the fact that the balloon is enormous would be scary, it's commonplace in hat-rack-world for giant balloons to exist, so you're used to their size.

celticchip73 replied: "Size envy. The hat rack will feel small/ insecure about a giant balloon able to hold a big / bigger hat than himself. That is my guess."

Siancam replied: "It's a fricking GIANT BALLOON. That's scary enough for me. Getting it stuck between my hat rack prongs so I couldn't fulfil my destiny as a hat rack would be a bit rubbish though."

Jasper replied: "The hat rack fears getting somehow entangled up with the giant baloon and being carried away! I've lost more hat racks that way!"

What happens if your rack and pinion steering breaks? I'm thinking I may have a transmission problem BUT I know the rack and pinion steering had some issues at one point so I was wondering what happens if that breaks? My car will start fine but when I put it in gear it does nothing other than make a weird grinding sound. I just want to have all the info I can before I tow it to a shop. Thanks in advance!

steve m replied: "sounds like its in the tranny"

Danny To replied: "rack and pinion is a STEERING component, you are probably referring to the manual transmission. When it breaks, you are unable drive your vehicle."

ineedacar replied: "if your stering system breaks down it will become diffacult or impossible to stear the car"

baldie replied: "if the rack breaks, you wont be able to steer your car and it could kill you and maybe the people who rides with you, but that has nothing to do with the tranny, better get it to a tranny mechanic for that problem."

guess78624 replied: "Your rack and pinion steering is another system! Is the transmission full of oil? It won't pull if it isn't, and if you try very long it will be ruined!--- It has to be reasonably near full to work properly, -- it could just be that you hear oil "cavitating" in oil pump! This is what they call it when oil and air are going through oil pump together! If this came upon you suddenly, look for a major oil puddle underneath car, -- maybe you blew a hose or seal and pumped it all out! In any case you don't want to try to drive it till it is full of oil! == Which will start pumping out on ground rapidly,- if you have a leak somewhere! And of course it could be that the transmission just "died"!!"

What are the benefits of installing networking hardware into a rack? Why bother with a rack at all? What are the benefits and drawbacks to a rack installation? What alternatives are there to a traditional rack installation? Please quote references.

thunder2sys replied: "Benefits of a rack are space saving, keeping the equipment off a desk, centralized, internal power distribution in the rack, etc."

Robert Santellan replied: "I am an IT and the reason you benefit from this is better network performance. When network equipment is stacked on top of eachother instead of an a rack, it gets hot and reduces network performance. Also, when they are stacked, they experience EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) from one another, also reducing performance. Another reason is because network cables and other cable can also produce EMI, and putting your equipment on a rack will give you more room to separate cable that are not associated with eachother. Doing so will overall boost your overall network performance and make managing your network and troubleshooting network issues far more easier."

Andrew S replied: "The obvious answer is space saving. It depends on what hardware your using really. The majority of commercial network hardware is rackmountable and normally comes in 1u or 2u. I have only seen personal desktop switches that are not rack mountable. The other obvious answer is that your hardware is nearer the patch panels / firewall /router thus providing space saving and security in wall mounted lockable cabinets. Hope this is of help. I currently manage about 10 of these cabinets."

Colin H replied: "There are alot of benfits from installing into a rack. 1. Network management is alot easier 2. Reduced electrical and fire risk 3. Easier to protect with UPS as equipment power comes from the rack, rack power comes from UPS. 4. Adds physical strength (kit can not be dropped, cables pulled.) 5. You can restrict access to the network euipment by locking rack, cabinet doors. 6. Easier to keep equipment at optimum temperature and humidity. 7. Easier to diagnose faults as all equipment is local and easy to inspect. 8. Your installation becomes modular and easier to upgrade, raplace faults."

Why is there a metal rack in the microwave of my sister's house? It looks like an oven rack. It doesn't make sense, because I remember what happened when I accidentally put a fork in the microwave once. But turn that thing on, with metal in it, and all is fine.

Denali replied: "it's probably a toaster or convection oven and not a microwave. You can't put metal in a microwave as you already know.."

wmiaspc replied: "My microwave oven also come with a metal rack so it is safe to use. It is a different kind of "metal", the manufacturer already figure this out."

Jimmy j replied: "Its NOT a differant type of metal. It is treated/baked with a film to cover the metal so it does not spark. If you scratch it bad enough it will still spark."

scout485 replied: "That is how it is designed--so you can microwave two items at once."

Blue Jay replied: "I have an older Microwave/ convection oven withe a rack in it."

Any ideas on how to decorate a towel rack? My bathroom is a beige color and I have antique bronze accessories - towel rack, new outlets, etc. I am just not sure how to decorate the large towel rack above my tub. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

redshorty71 replied: "Try maybe looking in crafts for something to maybe stensil on there like vines or something. Or if you want a cheaper way take paint and a sponge and make like an antique looking one that way. Good luck and have fun with it, you never know what you might get. :)"

What do you do when cooling off cookies on a wire rack? I am going to bake cookies and in the recipe it says to cool of cookies on a wire rack. Do I have to put them on a wire rack or can I just leav them on the baking sheet? If I have to put them on a wire rack, do i put the cookies on their sides or just normally?

Bugz replied: "uhmm maybe ur mom should help u cook..... just leave them alone, or put them on wax paper after they are cooked...."

Mrs. M replied: "You set them flat on the wire rack. By setting them on the rack, you are allowing them to cool all the way around."

kitkat replied: "I know most recipes say to cool on a rack, but I usually just lay out paper towels and cool them there. Let them cool a minute or two on the sheet, then move to the paper towel."

am492004 replied: "cookie sheet is all you need i baked cookies for 20 yrs for my 2 boys and thats all i ever used"

Paula P replied: "you can leave them on the sheet if it is non stick or has been greased. If you put them on a baking wire rack you put them normally like you would put them on a dish."

mskash replied: "if u leave them on the baking sheet they will continue to cook until the pan cools off, putting them on the wire racks stops the cooking process, otherwise they would over cook and be harder on the bottom"

mamaflutey replied: "I actually wound up with some wire racks - and I occassionally use them. Most of the time, I set them on a plate."

April replied: "I think you got a bit confused. They tell you to put the cookies on a wire rack because it allows air to flow under the cookies. When you take cookies out of the oven, steam will be coming out from them. So, if you put them on a surface or leave them on the baking sheet, they will absorb back the steam and get humid. So, in order to avoid that, you put them normal on the rack. You just pass them from the baking sheet to the rack. There's no need to put them on their sides or anything. If you don't have a wire rack, you can put them in another container. Just put a few napkins or a paper towel on the container, and then the cookies. That way the paper will absorbe the steam and the cookies will be ok."

2Westies replied: "I put my cookies on brown paper shopping bags to cool."

Rainbow H replied: "A wire rack is great, but you really don't need one if you only bake cookies once in a while. Just get a plate and make sure they lay flat so they don't break as they cool. You could always lay them out on a clean cutting board too."

stacy a replied: "you put them on a wire rack so they can cool off. You use a spatula and scoop the cookie unto the rack and lay them flat once cool take them off and eat. the cookies will continue to bake if left on the cookie sheet."

HunterFisher replied: "Flat on the rack using a spatula to remove them from the baking sheet. The idea is to get air to surround the cooling cookie to maintain the texture evenly throughout. That is what gives cookies a nice crunch. Leaving them on the baking sheet will scortch them on the underside due to too much heat for too long a timeframe and leave them soft in the center. Not a good thing."
